Meet the Maker: Fanchromatic Nails

Posted by Manna Berg on

Let's get to know Lynae Zebest, the maker of Fanchromatic Nails!
How did you choose your brand name?
It's a mashup name meaning "colors for fans" - I focus on doing fandom-inspired colors :)
What's your all time favorite polish/collection that you created? Non polish makers: your favorite product?
I've probably most enjoyed doing my Tolkien inspired colors - that dreamy, creamy palette of muted jewel tones and crelly textures really appeals to me.
What was the very first polish you made and sold? Non polish makers: your first product?
Spatial Anomaly was the first polish I sold, back in 2012! It's since been discontinued due to a component shortage issue, but I still wear my bottle of it sometimes :) The steel blue was full of these little holo flecks that just really knocked it out of the park!
Is your business full time? If not, what’s your other job?
Fanchromatic Nails is sort of full time? It's my primary gig. I also do executive assistant & event planning work, and I have started a new bath and body line that I'm super excited about, called Galatea Cosmetics.
Besides nail polish/handmade, what are your others interests?
I am really into scale dollhouse miniatures - I have only 1 dollhouse, but enough tiny furniture and tiny food to fill 3 or 4 of them :) The more realistic, the better, but I especially like really mundane miniatures like tiny toilet paper rolls or vaccuums or coat hooks. Stuff that people normally overlook. I also collect 1980s My Little Ponies, I'm a freshwater aquarium hobbyist, and I have 3 beloved pet rats with whom I spend a LOT of time.
Do you have a dedicated space for creating?
Yes, I have a workroom in my home, but I live in San Francisco where space is at a real premium, so the room also doubles as a library and storage space. I don't usually share photos of it because I feel like it's not really picturesque like the ones I see on Pinterest!
Do you feel like you have to strike a balance between what you personally like and what you think will sell? How do you walk that balance?
I honestly have a hard time predicting what will sell. I personally usually like really weird colors, textures and color combinations, which can be hit or miss with customers... but if I try to design for "what will sell" I tend to miss the mark. So I try to only release things I really love, and hope they'll resonate with my audience too :)
If you could design a polish for any celebrity, who would it be and why? What color/type of polish? Non polish makers: what kind of product?
I want to design a android-chic nail color for the Archandroid, Janelle Monae. She's totally my hero, I love everything about her. It'd be a brushed-metal-finish matte metallic, in her choice of shade.
What theme would you like to see in The Pickup?
I'd like to see something that really challenged us makers to push outside the box! Maybe one where we all had to use the same specific image or video for our inspiration...
What is your favorite item to shop for from the pickups?
I really like finding special and unique polishes from brands I haven't tried!
